Leaning tree and taking the stake out?

Is it possible to straighten a tree after it has been planted a year. We moved into our house last year, the contractor put in 2 Indian Laurel trees and staked them right next to the trunk with what looks like a rod from inside the closet to hang clothes on (very thick). During the year with the help of some pretty intense winds the tree started to lean. I am new to tree care and landscaping in general. I can't get the rod out of the ground and am afraid to dig around the roots for hurting the tree. How do I get the closet rod out? And if I do then what?

Thanks in advance for any input you can give me.

You've explained it pretty well, but is it possible to take some pictures of the tree?

What happens when you try to spin the post? If it's round without anything attached to it (like a fence T-post has), you should be able to spin it which might allow you to remove it. I agree that it probably won't be best to dig it out if it's right beside the tree. If all else fails, you may end up having to cut the post as low as possible (at ground level or a little lower) and leave the bottom portion in the ground. This is not the ideal solution, but would certainly be better than having the tree's trunk try to grow around the post.

i really want to see a picture..

but if it was just planted.. i would dig out half.. under dig a bit.. pull it straight... and tamp the soil in real well ...

and then stake it properly.. if wind is really that big a problem...

all speculation without a picture ...

go out.. and work the stake back and forth.. 10 times a day ... and within 30 days.. it will come out ...

"but if it was just planted"

"Is it possible to straighten a tree after it has been planted a year."

--------------------------------

"go out.. and work the stake back and forth.. 10 times a day ... and within 30 days.. it will come out (and probably cause terrible damage to your tree's root structure)..."

Again, see if the tube will spin. Don't work it back and forth much if any!

If the tree wants to blow over after a year of effective staking it hasn't rooted out well enough to hold the top up. Since root-bound stock is unfortunately very common this may be involved.

hmmm.. brandon throwing down the gauntlet.. and bboy coming to my aid.. go figure ... lol

if the tree is not straightened .. consider it dead ... ergo .. digging half the roots .. and leaving half.. gives it a better shot at success .. in my mind anyway ...

i agree with bboy ... it wouldnt have blown over.. if there was an extensive root system developed in one year ...

its health will recover faster when the tree is straightened ...

still all moot.. without a picture ...

i had 2 two year in situ 6 foot, bare root tulip poplar .... increase threefold in canopy in two years ... big thunderstorm ... drops enough water ... to liquify the sand .. and then along comes the storm winds after ... blown to 45 degree angle

one tree i simply pulled back to vertical .. and staked .. the stake of which brandon was kidding me about last week ...

the other.. couldnt pull it .. so i dug half way around.. as noted above.. straightened it.. and staked it..

5 years later.. they are equal .. no impact with digging...

but i cant keep a buck away from one of them .. lol

But Ken, you're making assumptions without all the facts. You may be correct, but it's impossible to know without more information. The rootball may have shifted, but that information isn't given by the initial post. Maybe the trunk is just crooked or leaning but the rootball and base of the trunk are where they've always been. We need pictures or feedback from the initial poster to attempt that determination!

As for digging, maybe, but that would be a last resort for me, unless BBoy's assumption is correct and the rootball is moving, in which case I would probably remove the tree. Digging around the tree just to remove the post might require significant root removal/damage. Which is why I'd try twisting a round post out.

Xoxosmom, we need feedback.
