New tree species honored in Rhode Island

From the Friday 2/15 state-by-state news section of USA Today:

"The Newport (R.I.)Tree Commission has named a cooper leaf beach as the city's tree of the year for 2012."

Word has it that the "cooper leaf beach" narrowly beat out a paprika white beach and a two-lipped pooper for tree of the year honors. :)

See if I got this...

The beach is the most popular? I thought that was Liriodendron tulipifera.

VV, R.I. is a northern state with a long coast line for such a small state. It was a foregone conclusion that a beach would win.

I heard Coopertone tanning lotion sales surged 40% shortly after the announcement

You could tell EXACTLY when our own paper moved to what amounts to desk-top publishing where the journalist does their own proofing (or not). I thought Mac had spell check? Hit that submit and it's a wrap. I was reading a national publication online last week and I can forgive a typo, but this journalist was speaking about something surviving in-tack. I must have reached old-fogeydom because yes, it did bother me.
