How close to a septic field can I plant a couple of poplars?

You have a few choices here: Kansas Don't plant this species anywhere near the septic field. I would go no closer than 80' with poplars maybe even further :) John

We probably need to know WHY you want to plant them close to the septic field so we can give suggestions on alternatives and get better insight into your situation. John

John, Took me a minute to get your point. I want to plant some deciduous trees on my property line, mainly as a visual to define the property and have some fall color. Something fast growing. Unfortunately that is the best spot so as not to block neighbors views. I have about three acres, dead flat. Thanks, John

Septic fields should not have any trees near them IMO especially poplars, willows, and maples. Perennials would be more in line with what I'm comfortable with on my septic field. Maybe a shrub or two but not any trees. You know, there are many shrubs and perennials that offer good fall color if you would be willing to go that direction. Some of the finest fall color out there actually :) If you have 3 acres, isn't there plenty of other space to plant trees? And blocking the neighbors is exactly WHAT I try to do lol... well maybe not their views since we don't have the majestic vistas you might where you live. Do you know about how much precip you get during the growing season on average? The Colorado climate is pretty varied. John

John, Thanks for your interest. Annual precipitation is 13 inches, not sure how much is considered in the growing season. I'm down near four corners, 6000 ft. elevation. A lot of hay fields around.

Populars have a reputation for being fast-growing, but also short-lived, weak-wooded, prone to breakage and messy, and seem to be pretty despised as long-term residential yard/landscape trees. That said, the Yellow Poplar is not a 'real' poplar. I'm not pushing it, and they get huge, just mentioning it. I believe I've read elsewhere not to put a poplar or willow within either 100 or 150 (I can't remember which) feet of a septic field. I hedge my bets with Roebic Foaming Root Killer, flushed down the toilet twice per year (Spring and Fall). Seems a judicious precaution, since leach field repair can cost several grand. Richard.

Something fast growing. ===>>> NEVER ...EVER .. plant something with marketing hype as such ... as dr rich said: fast-growing, but also short-lived, weak-wooded, prone to breakage and messy, and seem to be pretty despised as long-term residential yard/landscape trees. and the key there is residential.. maybe on the golf course.. 100 feet from ANYTHING ... but not in a small garden.. defined as less than 5 acres ... and i am of the opinion that anything you flush down the toilet will NOT.. in any manner.. affect an aggressive tree ... its a pipe dream.. and a boat payment for the seller ... you can do a lot better with just about any other tree ... how about defining some facts for us.. and letting us make some suggestions .. rather than taping ourselves into a poplar box.. and going from there ... and starting a new post with a title other than poplar .. will make it searchable for other peeps also looking to plant some new trees this spring .... PROPER planting time for z5 .. is when the ground thaws.. or around 4/1 ... so we have some time to define.. and search out some good trees for spring planting ... ken
