Neighbors need privacy from a busy street and the bright lights in a church parking lot behind their house. There is a pool in their yard so they don't want anything that sheds a lot or has fruit or berries. They are considering Leyland Cypress. When we lived in Maryland, we had Leylands and I wonder if they are suitable for North Texas where we can have a solid week of 108 degree temperatures in the summer coupled with no rain for two months. We also get strong winds at times and occasional snow and ice in the winter. The soil in our neighborhood is heavy clay. Any ideas or suggestions?

Leyland Cypress are bad news especially with drought conditions. They can get Seridium canker which is incurable. Nellie R. Stevens holly would probably be the best screen. They can handle the heat and are pretty drought tolerant.

Ditto the above comment. We lost several 6 yr. old established Leylands this past summer with 90 days of 100 F+ and little rain even though we were watering them. Eastern Red Cedar, Italian Cypress, and Arizona Cypress might be some additional choices.

I'd go with Arizona Cypress as the best option. Resin

Using a combination of the above listed plants would work depending on the height and the room you have. The dark green of a NRS Holly would look good with "Blue Ice" or some of the other cultivar Arizona Cypress.
