Tree planted today

Hi,
The neighborhood association planted a Pin Oak in my yard today. The next few days will have lows in the mid to low 20's and highs in the 40s. Is this tree basically DOA?

No, not at all. Should be fine. I assume it is dormant at this point.

yup! dormant. I guess I don't have to worry about the ground freezing like up north, and once we get through this cold blast the weather will be quite nice.

Now is an EXCELLENT time to plant a tree or shrub in areas where the ground isn't frozen solid (and assuming the soil is too wet to be workable).

Agree with all of your respondents. As long as the tree was in good shape to begin with, temperatures like that are no problem at all.

Thanks again everyone. I think I was just worried because I always hear that you plant trees in the fall or spring so the middle of February had me worried. I guess those rules are more common for northern climes.

Hopefully you have enough room for this tall-growing, stiffly branched tree that wants to branch all the way to the ground - and quickly droops down from above whenever limbed up.

Out here we have planted specimens of this species over 100' tall with trunks more than 3' in diameter.

Actually I looked more closely at the tree today and the oak was supposed to replace a Pin Oak that died (also newly planted last year). I don't think the replacement is a Pin oak like before. The branching looks more like a Willow Oak. I'm much happier with this choice as Pin oaks don't grow that well here, but I know these get massive. I live in a town home so I'm not exactly sure why they plant oaks in our community since the yards are small. I don't have much of a say in that discussion though. I guess we'll see when it leafs out this spring.

I don't know about North Carolina, but Arbor Day in Georgia is this coming Friday, Feb 17th. So it's a good time.
