Bulk tree seeds, where do you get them?

I notice a lot of people propagate by cuttings, though I also noticed some nurseries grow large quantities of trees by seed.

Having looked around though I've had a hard time locating vendors which sell bulk tree seed. Lots sell in quantities of say, 50 or 100 but there's often a lot of retail mark up in such small amounts.

So I was wondering if anyone out there knows of a bulk supplier.

Not looking for anything specific but just in general.

Try Schumacher or Sheffield's.

many COUNTY soil conservation dist offices sponsor plant sales at the appropriate planting season ....

see link for one such in FL ...

in MI ... i can get .. or used to.. 25 trees of one kind for $16 .. i am sure the prices have risen ... but do look into it.. even if you missed this years ...

with many years of experience.. i would suggest you leave seed growing to the pro's .... when dealing with trees .... presuming you actually want to see your trees hit maturity in your lifetime.. lol ..

its not that it cant be done.. but to do it well.. its more than throwing some veggie seeds on the ground.. and harvesting 60 or 90 days later ....

good luck

It depends on what you're looking for. Rare species, it helps to have seed suppliers. For common species, they collect seeds locally. I ordered acer truncatum seeds from Schumacher 5 or 6 years ago and now know where to collect seeds locally mainly because I planted them everywhere...

Yeah Ken. I understand tree growing isn't typically something most people do, very much so from seed. But I figured it wouldn't hurt to try.

May take a long time to grow them but I'm still in my early 20s. :)

Thanks for some of the tips on suppliers and local collection, will have to check them out.

well .. of course try ...

and buy others.. and compare..

and learn ...

some of the old farts here.. dont have 10 years.. to get a tree to 3 feet tall .. lol ..

and let me give you one other hint ... the darn things.. all kinds grow like weeds on my sand ... they are sprouting everywhere ... oaks.. maples.. juniper.. etc ..

they are not annuals.. perennial.. nor houseplants.. they do NOT like peaty media ... drainage is the supreme issue .... whatever that drainage may be for you selected type ....

so if you try.. research what top grow them in.. do not make presumptions .. eh??

good luck

and have fun ...

Yeah, definitely need to find things that like sand. :P It's literally all my property is more or less.

Sand, and if you dig down you'll find lumps of rusty iron everywhere lol.

Primary thing that's around here is southern pine and a few types of oak. I get a lot of pine trees popping up from time to time from adjacent lumber plots.

As mentioned above, Sheffield's Seed (very good G.WD. rating) and F.W. Schumacher (very good G.WD. rating) are the two big ones. Others include J. L. Hudson (very good G.WD. rating), Angelgrove - in Canada (excellent G.WD. rating), Plant World Seeds - in the UK (excellent G.WD. rating), Gardens North - in Canada (excellent G.WD. rating), Sparkleberry Springs (limited, excellent G.WD. rating), and The Fragrant Path (very good G.WD. rating).

I have used F.W. Schumacher for the past 5-6 years with great results. You can't beat their $3 packets if you are growing a few trees for your own property.

I have been looking at Sheffield's Seed this spring, and will probably be putting in an order with them as they have quite a few rare species available that Schumcher is out of.

EXACTLY ... so mimic how mother earth is doing it.. dont go making your life all complicated with theory.. and hundreds of dollars of equipment and supplies ...

it might be as simple as 3 RR ties .. and some chicken wire over them to keep out vermin.. and sow your seeds and water them ....

maybe not.. lol ...

Don't neglect gathering seeds yourself. Be on the lookout for trees that you might like to plant. Find out when their seeds/acorns/etc are ripe and return and collect them. Of course ask permission if tree is on someone's land.
From growing Arizona Cypress, I have found my seed- grown trees to be the more interesting than cultivars, because like Forest Gump's box of chocolates "You never know exactly what you are going to get"!
However some folks prefer no surprises!
