What tree is this?

I was in the San Francisco Bay area and walked the Telegraph Hill area. The photo provided is along the wooden steps facing the waterfront.
I'm trying to find the name of the tree with the beautiful purple flowers. There is also a smaller specimen at a friend's apartment's pool area in Fremont. So it's probably not too rare. Thanks,Brady

Jacaranda mimosifolia has purple blooming like that, but I don't know if they can grow in San Fransisco

Huggorm,
I looked at some pictures of the Jacaranda mimosifolia leaves and they are totally different. The leaves on this tree are a simple ovate shape as far as I can tell and remember. Brady

What about Tibouchina granulosa?

I can't see the leaf shape or even if the petals are fused in that foto. The microclimates in SFO are tremendous, and in that particular area even more so.
