A number of these trees were planted in sidewalks 4 years ago after Main St. reconstruction. Planted as ornamentals only I suppose, but in addition to fantastic bloom they produce a heavy apple crop which has been a boon to overwintering birds and uncommon migrants as well. (See photo) The downtown trees are a bit stunted, but others are growing faster. Not sure how big tree would get in better environment-- We need something to fill in where we lost a 44-foot spruce last year, need for screening compost operation & neighbors' house,as well as beauty & bird-food.
Does anyone know how large a tree (or 2, or 3) we should get, considering 5 to 10 yeartime frame?
