flowering crabapple questions

A while back, there was a discussion (I think I started) about disease resistant flowering crab cultivars.

JF Schmidt has a nice (but not complete) list of cultivars and their overall resistance.

However, a lot of the crabs around here defoliate by mid summer...and I guess I am curious the reason so that specific disease is the one I can be most focused on.

Fireblight seems to be only an occasional problem (seems to hit the Pyrus genus harder around here), and mildew sometimes shows up, but doesn't usually result in leaf loss from what I can see. That leaves Scab or CAR.

Anyone know which one is the likely culprit in MD?
