Privacy Trees...help!

Posted by plk75 none (My Page) on

We just had to cut down a very large oak tree that was close to our house and leaning over my daughters bedroom. The tree was probably 50-100 years old. I feel guilty, and to make matters worse...I hate that we have NO privacy in our backyard. I feel like I am on a stage whenever on our deck, or playing with the kids in the backyard. Our houses are close together and everyones second floor can see directly into our yard.
I have been trying to research privacy evergreen trees. But, would really like advice from people who may have, or have experience with them. In my search the Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae keeps coming up. Any advice pros/cons???? Or other fast growing recommendations? But can't be too wide.

Thanks so much!!!!

how big is your yard.. how high is the deck .. and anything else you can add that might help .. like where are you. zone.. soil ... etc ...

try to find something that has a fast growth rate.. check out the link for intro to conifers...

but stay away from anything MARKETED AS FAST GROWING ... fast to grow.. fast to disease .. fast to death.. as compared to other trees/conifers ...

the fastest way to privacy.. NOW.. is to rig up some type of lattice/bamboo screening .. that can be raised and lowered on days you want some privacy ... until our greenery can grow to height ....

large transplants of conifers.. take a long time to get established.. and end up taking more time to grow to size.. rather than smaller stock ...

good luck

I am in zone 6 and have a 6 foot fence that I would like to plant against. There is about 15 feet from the fence to the house.
