| Hi, I have a paper Birch that looks like it's struggling since late last year. It lost its leaves early and now looks like it's struggling to bud. My neighbor has one and it now has the green squigglies (sorry don't know the name of them) coming off and it seems to be getting ready to bloom. I treated my grass with scotts Plus 2 last year and just treated it with crab grass killer with Fert but I don't think that has much to do with it. I'm hoping I can save the tree as it's been there for some time before I bought the house and I'd hate to have it die in the first year I'm in the home. Any suggestions or what I can do to perk it up, i.e watering, fert, anything to bring it back.
Thanks

| its awful early to worry about it ... any chance of a picture??? do you have a mulch ring around the tree .. or did you apply all the fert and plant killer right to the trunk?? .. if anything.. it has gotten more than enough fert ... need a pic ken |

| Tree likes a cool summer, moist soil, full sun...not sure all those chemicals don't in fact have something to do with it. |

| The most common reason for decline in a birch tree of any age is borers. It's not a totally foolproof method of diagnosis, but generally if you see branches near the top of the tree which do not leaf out or leaf out only weakly, you likely have a borer investation. I've had good results using Bayer Advanced systemic poured around the roots to keep borers under control. I would also agree that any herbicides applied to a lawn can easily effect the tree, especially if it is already in a stressed condition. |
