| Hi folks. I have some nice looking Cryptomeria in my back yard forming a good size privacy screen. They are up to around 15-20 feet tall. This winter one of them has shown really strong browning of the "seed"-like bits that have grown on them. See the picture posted below. Should I be worried about this? Can anyone explain what these are and what might be done to try and avoid? It is the one in the middle, the upper half. As you can see the ones around it are fine. I have noticed a few other cryptos in the locale with similar issue

| i was pressed for time yesterday ... its a conifer .. as such.. it has.. get this.. cones ... cones brown and get hard as they age ... and can most likely look like seed bits ... many conifers can take over a decade to cone.. and i wonder if that one has finally hit that maturity ... a little ahead of the others ... the pattern of the brown.. MIGHT indicate that it is coning .. but i can not tell from that pic ... if it simply is cone remnants .. this years growth should cover it.. or they will fall off .... ken |

| Thank you everybody. Boy do I feel stupid, but I am a complete ignoramus and rookie when it comes to anything growing out of the ground. So yes looking at what was posted these are cones. I just find it looks kind of "sick" with so many of them and all looking "dead" Here are some close ups, presumably nothing to worry about? Here are some close ups

| lol ... yeah they looks like pollen sacs to me... and NOT cones ... for a conifer to mature to the point of coning... it has to be very happy ... [or near death as a mortality reflex .. but your is not that] enjoy the show.. learn.. and relax ... UNLESS ... you have allergies ... check the link ... second pic.. spot on.. i though google brought up your pic .... lol.. but the first pic shows the pollen being released ... i hope you dont have to stay indoors for a few days ... good luck ken BTW.. cone and pollen production varies wildly year to year ... so it may be a long time.. before you see this again .. on this plant .... at this level |

| Yes the tree is getting ready to bloom as all evergreens do. All bloom except mosses, algae, ferns and a few other groups of plants. This group of plants reproduces by spores whereas all other plants produce flowers solely for reproduction. Scott |

| Yep, pollen cones. Try to avoid breathing in any of the pollen when it blows around (clouds of yellow dust coming off in the next few days), it is a bad one for causing pollen allergies. Resin |
