Is it okay to plant Sensation lilacs next to our backyard deck? Should we be concerned with bees? Thanks!

No, and I don't think my wife or kids are either. My son was stung last year, but I can't remember the last time the rest of us have. Thanks!

Bees are not likely to be distracted by a bunch of silly humans when they are foraging for and collecting pollen and nectar. I've gently pushed bees away with my hand when cutting flowers for a bouquet.

My husband and I planted an Osmanthus fragrans near our back patio, and though highly attractive to bees, we've never once felt nervous about all the buzzing right next to us.

the one thing i tell women is ..

that bees are attracted to scent ... so if the bees are out.. do not perfume yourself [pheromone attractant] .... try to avoid perfume deodorants ... and foo foo laundry dryer sheets ...

as rhiz noted ... they really do have a job to do.. and unless you start waiving your arms.. or smell like a foo foo flower... they really arent going to come check you out ...

as for the kids.. well stung once.. lesson learned .. HEY!! pay attention.. and quit sticking your hand in the hive.. for crying out loud ... lol ...

each of mine got stung only once.. before they started paying attention .. in my case.. it was the clover in the lawn.. and repeatedly running thru it.. i said .. HEY!!! cant you see the clover in flower .. we have 5 acres... do you really need to run thru that patch????.. do you remember stepping on a bee ... do you want to go thru that again??? and lo and behold.. for that week.. they ran around the clover.. which i call a manicured lawn .. lol ..

in the olden days.. the greatest attractant in the universe .. was aerosol hairspray ... those days seem to mostly be gone.. but if grandma is sitting with a group ... fresh from the stylist.. no doubt.. a bee will come see her.. or grandpa smelling of the brewery .. lol ... both a scent ... upside is .. the kids wont be bothered ...

my last theory .. is the kids usually dont smell as clean.. soap .. they tend to be more earthy [especially if they do not bathe everyday] .. lol .. so the bees usually leave them alone ....

finally.. way back when.. i learned.. that i can work in a flower bed.. IF I MIND MY OWN BUSINESS .. with bees flying all around.. you have to take a deep breath .. and a long leap of faith .. and respect them.. and they simply will not bother you ... but swat at one.. and piss it off.. and you may as well drop everything and run.. you can clean up after dark .. lol ...

teach your kids .. and let them learn ...

and if you are allergic .. jsut go natural .. do not wear any scent .. as listed above.. and they simply will not be interested in you ... [dont forget hair conditioner]

ken

ps: and yes.. it is a woman thing .. because on average.. they smell better than men .. but for the beer ..

rhizo_1 is right, bees foraging aren't concerned w/anything else -- unless you step on them. Bees only become defensive near their nests.
