Should I take this tree down?

Take a look at this PIC.
I was cleaning the yard and found that the back of this pine tree seems to have some bad rot. There is still healthy pine cone and needles at the top of the tree. But the last thing I want is this to fall on my fence or worse me or my dogs...

PS. the rot in the pic looks worse in real life.

Take it out. It's doomed. And, yes, pines have a way of often looking pretty healthy right up until they come crashing down.

it probably happened when the lot was regraded over the root flare.. is this related to a new construction of some sort ... house.. driveway ... ????

get rid of it ...

Hello Keverdmann,

If it was a decidous tree and where it would not fall on a house or loved on I would almost say leave it. Pines in decline around here just do not look neat to me.

You aren't someplace where they naturally have a neat gnarly appearance are ya?

I live in Bayshore. The tree is at the rear of my yard and this is the side that faces the fence. Maybe I'll let it hang out another year and see what happens.

Hmmm, after what you said and what we said, that's not the response I expected. Another head-scratcher for me.....

RE: Should I take this tree down?

I think Kev is saying it's A) Far from the house or other targets, and B) The disfigured side is towards the fence and not towards his/her usual vantage point.

That is one thought I had earlier-the tree does not look very large so not likely to cause much damage if it does fall over. BTW Kev, did that tree by any chance get hit by lightening? Does that strip extend right up the trunk?
