Tree suggestion that will give me lots of leaves

I'm trying to plant all edibles in my yard, but I have an area where my septic sprinklers are that I'm not interested in eating from. However, I would like for it to benefit me in some way. I would like to replace the current cedar tree's with something that will give me a ton of leaves for composting. The mesquite, live oaks and cedars I have now don't really offer anything to the compost pile :( Color, beauty and shade would be nice, but my main objective is to have mounds and mounds of leaves for the fall. Ideas?

Whatever trees you decide on, it will of course be years before they are making lots of leaves. You might consider interplanting the new trees with something else to make leaves in the meantime. The leaves of Russian comfrey can be harvested 4 or 5 times a season. They have a reputation of being exceptionally mineral rich, which would make them great for compost. I think they would count as a "green" in your compost. They are easy to propagate by crown divisions/root cuttings, but don't spread on their own. As far as the trees go, it seems like you would want something that grows a a good clip. Maybe a red maple, or one of the red/silver maple hybrids. I don't know how much the leaf content of trees varies between species, but red maples certainly cast a dense shade, which would indicate a lot of leaves. Alex

Location? "Mesquite, live oaks and cedars" suggests somewhere fairly dry and hot, in which case, your options could be limited - anything else you plant would either have similar yield, or if potentially higher-yielding, wouldn't be able to cope with the climate. Resin

We must know your location as resin mentioned. It sounds like you are in TX and if so, Shumard oak might be something to look into. John

What large city do you live near? Zone 8 Texas is a lot different from my Zone 8 western Washington State. Since you are in a dry zone 8, I would think bringing in compost would be the best idea. Woodchips, Pine needles, municipal organic waste, etc. Mike

I'm in Bastrop, TX near Austin. Ken, the septic system is an aerobic system and I would be replacing tree's that are already there, just not as productive on the leaf factor. There is actually a mesquite tree less than 30' from the system, so I would guess it's ok. The tree's would get water from the system, but not very deeply. I do have access to my laundry and shower grey water and can supplement watering. Alex, I do like the idea of the Russian Comfrey, those are very pretty. I was just reading The Walden Effect and do like the sounds of it :) |

Plant trees to enjoy; not so that you can steal their nutrients (their decomposing falling leaves). Get the leaves from your neighbors who are not smart enough to mulch up their trees' leaves.
