| With roughly 40 days left before the threat of freeze/frost is gone in my zone 5 I'm curious if anyone has noticed any particular genus/species that despise freezes/frosts during bud break.
I've been told Witchhazel, Nyssa and Acer (japanese species) despise frosts/freezes. Frost is possible tonight and I only covered my JMs since it should be a lighter frost. |

| whaas, guess I don't understand what you mean by "despise" - do you mean "will get hurt" or are relatively immune to a light frost? I have seen all three not be affected by light frost. Guess the adage might be, "Cover your bud." (the d=tt) hortster |

| Not worried about swelling buds, actually young tender leaves. Probably easier to focus on those that are susceptible to frost damage. I always thought that those that leaf out later are susceptible to frost damage (ie Nyssa) and those that leaf out early aren't susceptible to frost damage (ie Aesculus pavia). Japanese maples throw a wrench in that theory. |

| There's a tendency for it to be southeast Asian species, like early rhododendrons, camellias, Japanese maples and true firs from that area. Perhaps the most conspicuous example is early magnolias, these are much-planted and often seen with frost injury. |

| Metasequoia is usually early to leaf out here. Just looks like it is ready to be frost nipped. This year it was middle of the road though. Most everything is leafing out at the same time. |

| Ginkgo. I have to cover mine when frost threatens after the buds break, or they're brown mush the next day. It's getting kind of big now, but I still try, because it sets it back a long time, about 3/4 weeks total, if they freeze, and the replacement growth is never as lush and full looking. |

| I concur with denninmi. Our Princeton Sentry has been frozen every year by one since we have had it. It comes out early, and then has little resistance to freezing. A BAD combination when you live in a cold spot. I have tried covering it. Tried covering it and adding lights and heating rocks, and the results are the same. Never grows much after being frozen. It has grown maybe 18-20" in five growing seasons. Top it off, it has turned yellow 1 year. It's late to turn and usually gets frozen in the fall too. I'm fertilizing the crap out of it this year. It either grows, or it's coming out. Arktrees |
