Hi, I'm thinning out my mini-arboretum but I'm left with stumps that keep resprouting; I've painted them with creosote to no avail, any suggestions? Cheers

Cut away some tree back to reveal the thin green layer underneath it (cambium/phloem if memory serves). Take some of the concentrate form of Roundup (or generic of it - glyphosate). Run that on the thin green layer. The purpose is to get the herbicide taken up & into the plant, to kill the plant, not just the part you cut off. That, at least, is my understanding based on other discussions in this forum. Richard.

Yes, drr has got it right. I would add though that time of year makes a large difference in how well this works, with this being the worst time of year and fall being the best. But what have you to lose aside from a small amount of product? It doesn't take a lot to do this. Another herbicide labelled for such use is Garlon. I've used both but prefer the glyphosate simply because I always have it on hand anyway, it mixes with water rather than Garlon's fuel oil carrier, and glyphosate is still one of the least toxic products out there for such use. +oM

While +oM's correct about this being a bad time (the dead of winter is probably even worse for most plants), don't let that stop you. When stump-killing this time of year, you may have to apply more than one application, but it can still be done.

the stump is 99% dead wood.. and putting anything on that 99% is a waste ... get some roundup.. 41% ... and put it in the very expensive applicator at the link ... for precise application ... apply to the cambian s noted above ... this will kill 98% of the stumps ... the others.. come back as soon as you see a sprout.. and apply one single drop to the cut ... either properly mark and secure the applicator ... or put the undiluted RU back into the original container ... do not waste the RU on the center wood.. that is NOT where the sprouts form ... ken ps: brand is not as important as the drip top .. think dollar store, perhaps ...

On a side FYI note. Creosote is extremely toxic to some wildlife. For example. It is one of the factors responsible for the decline of the Red Headed Woodpecker Melanerpes erythrocephalus. It is rather lethal to birds landing on telephone poles soaked in this material. Arktrees
