Looks like an Iris blossom to me. Not a tree though.

I agree with Denninmi on this one! Catalpa flowers do resemble iris flowers from pictures, though. Since this was assumed to come from a tree with branches and not a mass of foliage on the ground, catalpa makes the most sense.

Yes, definitely catalpa / zero chance of being an iris.

dirtman, although the colouring and overall impression might look similar a look at the structure shows the differences. Irises have 6 separate petals. Catalpa has its petals fused into a floral tube, not separate.

That is a Catalpa tree blossom.

And that's why some tree nerds like me insist to sticking a few of those 'dirty' trees on our property. LOL. Gorgeous aren't they?
