Need advice on spindly trees

Hi all,

I'm in the process of thinning timber from a parcel of land that was burned over approx. 15-18 years ago. A few older trees survived, but the vast majority of oak, pine, red maple, cedar, dogwood, wild plum, holly, gum, etc., is 15 years old. The trees have grown spindly as they raced to compete for canopy. I'm removing about 3/4 of the vegetation.

To give the remaining trees time to adjust to more light and wind exposure, I'm doing this over a 3 year span (mainly in the early spring and the fall). And I'm thinking that most of the trees will thicken up to better proportions in good time.

Here are my two starter questions...

Is there a special fertilizer I should consider giving the remaining trees to boost their development? Or would fertilizer just encourage them to grow taller at this point?

Would any of these trees respond well to top pruning? I'm especially wondering how the dogwoods would respond- they are very lanky.

Thanks for all that I've learned from you so far!
