I have searched the web and can't find an answer to my question. I have 2 dogwood trees that I planted 5 years ago. And for some reason the "flowers" have been appearing after the leaves. the Leaves seem to come out in April and the flowers in MAY. Every other dogwood on my block behaves normally and flowers in April and gets leaves in May. This seems to be happening again this year. I am not sure what I am doing wrong to make this happen. everything about the tree seems healthy.

"Dogwood" is a very general term. It's possible that the neighbors have so-called American dogwood, cornus florida while you have Asiatic dogwood, cornus kousa. The latter does bloom after the leaves, but generally not as early as May. There are also many other species of "dogwood" besides these two.

One way to tell if you have a Kousa dogwood (Cornus kousa) rather than a native flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) is to check out the fruit after bloom. If you do an image search, kousas have round bumpy reddish fruit while C. florida has a small cluster of oblong red berries. From the description, I expect you have a kousa dogwood. I believe they became more common at least partly due to a disease that often kills C. florida but doesn't seem to be a problem for Kousa dogwoods. I wouldn't be surprised if kousas in zone 6 bloomed in May as mine farther north bloom in June. There are also some kousa x florida crosses which I think bloom with the leaves out. Most (all?) of the other dogwoods have different flowers (clusters of small white flowers) without the large bracts that the C. florida and C. kousa have, and many are shrubby.

Thanks so much for the help. I thought I rememberd that is was a corns florida when I bought the trees 5 years ago but I may have been mistaken. I have included a picture of the trees taken last May. based on your suggestions I have looked into the berry thing but they are defiantly not like the ones on the Kousa dogwood. However I found a few pictures of the Kousa/florida hybrid and it could be that. Its certainly closer to correct. If anyone else has ideas let me know. Currently the leaves are almost out on my tree and the flowers are starting, both trees are about 7' tall. You are all amazing.

Looks like Stellar Pink Dogwood to me. The Pink florida x kousa hybrid dogwood. It would flower after the native Cornus florida dogwood. Arktrees

I have a Cornus Kousa Satomi dogwood and it blooms after the leaves. In fact, this particular dogwood doesn't begin to bloom until June, long after most other dogwoods in my area. Linda

From the growth pattern shown in the picture, it's clearly not straight cornus florida. It may be a variety of c. kousa if the normal bloom time is toward the end of May. If it's closer to the beginning of May, then I think it's very likely that it is one of the c. florida x c. kousa hybrids as arktrees suggested.

Yup, I think several folks nailed it -- notice the bracts, they're not as pointed as a kousa, and not as rounded as a florida, but in between. I would say its one of the hybrids, and as such, its bloom time would be in between the periods of the two parents.
