Personal Tree Lists?

This week I set about making an Excel list of every tree and bush I have which I planted. It grew to include all the older ones in my yard also.

Much to my surprise I have 80 something (70 in the ground) depending on how many honeysuckle will regrow despite the round-up and where the property line is exactly in the two thicket areas.

I did count the dozen or so trees in pots. Yuccas, Hostas and Peonies did not make the list while Elderberry (as one plant) and the darned Grape vines did.

Seems like a lot to me but there are two 'woody' areas bordering my 1.2 acre plot I suppose.

Just curious, to your best guesses how does this compare to your plots of land? I know at least Ken will have more, and an exact number!

Do you belong to the Forest Keepers? The MO Dept of Conservation has a orginization keeping track of trees and their mast. Check it out if you don't belong.

Are you talking about the number of SPECIES or the number of SPECIMENS.

I made a list back in March of the number of SPECIES of trees and near trees (large woody shrubs with tree potential, such as Cornus mas). I came up with 116 on my property.

I added #117 yesterday, I bought a Davidia 'Sonoma' at a local nursery (along with a 2 year warranty and a lot of prayers about the winters, since I think Michigan is pushing it for this tree).

I also made a spreadsheet this spring that has species - common names, bud break, first flower, autumn color/intensity, caliper, last freeze, and first freeze.

I think I ended up with around 80 planted species and around 90-95 total planted trees and shrubs. Of course there is a ton of diversity on the property naturally. I can't fathom a guess as to the true number of distinct species here. I have since added a few more but haven't put them on the list yet.

I have dated photo albums for each of the 41? trees in my yard, and for many of the shrubs too. Also any plantings or other major issues get logged onto an excel spreadsheet for the house. Geez, and I was thinking I was the only anal.....

The internet enables compulsive behavior by bringing similar compulsives togehter! Good to hear a couple of you have more. Believe I read zone 7, Arkansas, Tennessee like, host the absolute most plants so it doesn't surprise me you all have that many. Ken, I can't believe you do up in the great north.

Farmboy, one year I did a photo album. It was a nice touch. The pictures show when everything flowered or when it snowed. That was nice and neat you have a running one.

List looks better in Excel, I have locations and all but it doesn't translate well into gardenweb. Seems more natural sorted by age than by name.

LOL yes I put a big bold DEAD in bold italics! I might add the suspected cause of death if I were not so spiteful towards the deceased for crapping out on me...

I know what you mean. Over the years taking the deceased up to the bonfire pit has become a sign of respect. If I am mad at a small tree that croaked due to no perceived fault of my own I just toss it in thd yard and let the mower chew it up next time around!

No, it would be too depressing to keep track of all of the ones that didn't make it, especially over the past few years when deer have been using the young trees to rub off the velvet. My fault because I haven't had the time to adequately protect them. At least I've finally learned my lesson, I've got the big roll of 5 foot welded wire fencing to make the protective cylinders.

as the years roll on.. and the collection grows.. it is IMPERATIVE.. to keep track of the dead ones ....

    for one of two reasons...

    so you can replace it..

or never buy it again ...

depending on what reason it died i suppose ...

trust me.. you younguns.. sooner or later.. you will start saying.. boy that name sounds so familiar.. why?? .. what was the deal.. has it been on my wish list forever.. or have i killed it before ...

it is especially important on zone pushers ...

    OCD gardeners represent!!

I keep a list of everything I have planted since I moved in in '07.
I also keep rough drawing of each section of the yard with plants keyed in- I am forever forgetting which daylily is which, LOL.
I haven't added this years additions (which is an alarmingly long list on it's own, I've gone Kousa crazy) but my list is linked below for the curious- it's way at the bottom of the page past the Pet Cemetery.

Here is a link that might be useful: My stuff

I have lost so many of the puter generated lists over the years mostly due to defunct programs and operating systems. I started throwing tree and shrub tags into a big bin, but had thrown dozens of them previous to that. I don't even bother listing perennials or duplicate trees and no longer bother keeping bed layouts. My obsession covers acres and many are so unusual in the trade if somebody else ever owns this property they'd be hard put to know what they may be contemplating cutting down. I'll come back and haunt them if they do. LOL. I used to buy metal tags to mount on wood stakes in the ground near-by but have even stopped doing that. I'm a nurseryman, so know most of what I planted, other than the cultivar names..........and it's a forest now, so I don't care to know what each one is anymore. I just enjoy them.

I have photo albums with planted on dates and take a new pic each year and add it to the albums. There are some trees that I haven't added yet though, mostly last falls additions. My Quercus Fusiformis acorns haven't sent out their leaves yet, so I don't know how many sprouted yet. After going around the yard in my mind counting and puting a check mark on paper for each tree I came to 80. There may be more, but it's close I'm sure. I included shrubs and trees only. I forgot to add the 2 Western hemlocks I ordered and the Rhododendron I got out of the woods, also the windmill palm I ordered so 83.
