Avocado pit mold?

Hi, I'm trying to germinate three avocado pits at once using the toothpick-water method, but somehow they all have white fuzzy mold forming at the waterline. I'm sick of wiping the mold off everyday. is there a way (besides baking soda) that I can kill the mold once and for all? (and yes, the pits are alive, they are cracking open gradually) I'd appreciate some answers, thanks!

You'll probably find a big response in the House Plant Forum, where this kind of question is fairly common.

I'll suggest that you dip the pit in a 10% bleach solution, pull out the toothpicks, and plant the pit in a good quality, coarse textured potting medium, in a 6 inch (or so) terra cotta pot.

Rooting the pits in water reduces the success rate quite a bit, as you can see. The ONLY benefit is that you can watch the roots develop, and that's not a benefit to the plant. ;-)

Next time, allow the avocado to ripen to the point of being almost mushy (think in terms of quac instead of slices), remove the pit and allow to air dry enough so that you can peel away the outer skin. Even when planted in a good medium that skin tends to get moldy. Leave the tip of the pit exposed when you plant. Place the container in a warmish, bright location and be patient. Don't allow the potting mix to become bone dry, but don't keep it soggy, either.

wow! thanks a lot! :) But won't the bleach harm the pit?

Nope, not for a quick dip. Remember....10%, not full strength.
