Need Help With Black Walnut Saplings.

A friend of mine just gave me two walnut saplings and I'd like to hear some tips/suggestions on how to plant them and care for them. I'm also fairly new to gardening and I don't know a lot about tree saplings, so anything you guys can tell me is greatly appreciated.

Well, your going to need to plant them in a good dark soil without rocks and good drainage. Plant them like any other plant or flower. You dig a hole twice the size of the root system. Then you put the plant in the hole and cover it gently with dirt. Fill with dirt up to the point slightly above where the roots start to come out. Then you give it a good soaking. You dont need to put a cage around it because deer and other animals hate the taste of walnut. Also, be sure not to plant it near a road or a house. The nuts can be a real mess sometimes.

Yes, they don't bother the black walnut.......until.........it gets just the right size for the bucks to rub their velvet on and they did a job on ours for several years running, doing some substantial damage to the lower branches and bark.

BW is probably the hardiest hardwood around here. Rarely see any with insect damage, or storm damage. I have planted several from seed, just put the green nut a inch down in the fall, maybe put some wood chips on top. In good conditions they grow a foot per year. The nuts are kind of a pain, but the animals eat most of them. Mature BWs are quite elegant.

We have to fight the animals for our share, LOL. Yes, they're a pain to process, but I have pounds of them in my freezer and chuckle every time I pass the displays on the store shelves with exhorbitant prices. Many people don't fancy the taste of them, but if you do it is wonderful having an almost unlimited supply of these delicacies. Hint, buy the most durable nut cracker invented. Ours is a heavy iron job with an enormous lever, and pray for patience and eat your wheaties before starting.

Do a little checking into Juglone, which Black Walnut Trees put in the soil, and that can inhibit or kill some other plants. Plants vary in their sensitivity, but for example, if you have a row of azaleas or a small tomato garden nearby, well...

Richard.
