Cherry Fiasco @ Lowe's Last year I purchased a Yoshino Cherry @ Lowe's Garden center. It just opened it's first bloom and it is a Kwanzan Cherry. I went back to Lowe's without my receipt but had a picture on my digital camera hoping to try to get the right variety. I was anxious to see whether or not the trees there at the G.C. were still in flower so I could be sure of what I was getting. I see some flowers, it's a Yoshino, check the tag, it's tagged as a Kwanzan Cherry. I was like no way they totally still have them tagged wrong!!!!! So I got the mgr and got my plant half price (it was the next size larger) but that is not all to the story.....It is too funny when I got the mgr over to the trees, I pulled the tag out to show him on the same tree I'd just looked over that the trees were tagged wrong, and it said Yoshino?????? What the heck there were 3 tags one said Kwanzan and one said Yoshino and the picture tag showed Kwanzan. All of the trees there at in the nursery dept. were tagged that way!!! Whoa guess what if you are buying a flowering tree from Lowe's buy it in bloom. Nuf said!! ;0)I am not bashing Lowe's they are one of the best suppliers of plants in this area..... Everyone makes mistakes even the big companies but once these trees are out of bloom a lot of customers will be very disappointed.

If only this problem were limited to Lowes or even big box stores for that matter... heck even local nurseries mis-tag stuff all the time. Good for you using your knowledge to get a good deal on something at the store! John ps- did the mgr remove the incorrect tags? I bet not...

I suspect it was tagged by the supplier, not the box store. They buy lables at the source compatible to the customers with whom they have contracts. So a supplier's tag will be complete with the store name and also their sku numbers and bar codes. If it makes you feel any better, I put a Yoshino outside my kitchen window, and found out after it bloomed I had a Kwanzan cherry instead. LOL. I went back through my labels, and I had gotten it from Lowes. However, the mistake was not their's but mine. The tag clearly read Kwanzan, and I had a brain fart. I own a nursery. LOL. It's in our genes, I guess.

I've seen one kind of magnolia in bloom at a big box with three different variety labels. The trees were split up into three sections, all right together. I think it was Lowe's, but don't remember for sure.

We are landscaping a newly purchased home. I have noticed an alarming trend in some of the big box stores, (But not Lowes). We have been buying azaleas, and some of the stores are not even aware that there are different varieties. In fact some like Home Depot only label their azaleas as when it blooms. We were in the other day since they had a good price. We looked at the azeleas and could not even tell from the labels it they were the Formosa type, or Encore. We asked the clerk, he is the one that didnt not know there were different varieties of azaleas. I saw the same situation at Walmart. I guess we should not be considering Walmart but we are looking to put in a couple of dozen plants this spring so price is a consideration.

Your first problem is that you are doing your nursery shopping in big box plant departments instead of actual nurseries (independent garden centers etc.), whose entire or main focus is plants and related merchandise. It's like complaining that a hamburger joint doesn't have nice steaks.

LOL, I had to stop by Lowe's in Bloomfield Twp, Michigan yesterday on my way home for a couple of little plumbing parts. I remembered this thread, so I went down to the garden center end to see how they had tagged their ornamental cherries. All wrong. Some kind of upright white cherry was labeled as P. subhirtella pendula. The Kwanzan were labeled as Yoshino. The weepers were labeled as Kwanzan and/or Yoshino. One tree was labeled as both a Kwanzan and a pendula. Of course, this makes up for the couple of pots of apple trees on the next pallet that had no variety tags at all, just a red blank plastic tag. I should have taken 5 minutes to fix them, but I figured store security would come haul me away!
