I have two weeping and one upright Katsura. I've never had a problem with frost damage despite late frosts in a couple of seasons.

The katsura trees on the east side of another tree, in one case, and the house, in a second case, have thrived and experienced no leaf scorch. The tree on the west side of the house gets full sun for most of the day except for about 2 hours at mid-day and has had minor to moderate leaf scorch every summer. I give it extra mulch and try to keep it moist with supplemental watering. It is still healthy but it clearly isn't cut out for all day sun.

I'm in a fairly bad frost-pocket, and my 6' Katsuratree (C. J. magnif.) does leaf out alittle early (mid April). The new sprouts shrug off mild frosts, but were killed last yr by late May frosts. But they quickly sprouted right out of the damage.

This yr no damage (yet) 'cause the chronic cold delayed emergence. This tree gets mostly full sun and wind exposure, and doesn't get leaf scorch if watered every ~2 weeks or so when it doesn't rain. It was very water-needy the first summer before it got established.

i am about to take possession of a katsura tree, it looks no more than a 10" twig. how long should I expect this twig to grow some branches. I intend to plant it in a container, and is I fast or slow growing tree..
