Bark problem on white oak

This is a bark problem on a mature white oak in our backyard (near Dallas). I've checked dozens of bark disease pics and can't find anything that looks like this.

The patches are missing bark in sections ranging from 1" to 3" all around the trunk, and none go all the way through to the wood. There are squirrels nesting in the tree but we have always had them and this is the first Spring we have seen the bark problem. I took three dead lower limbs off, two last fall and one this spring. They died due to shade-out most likely, and all three were cut with plenty of collar left on the trunk. Other than that, nothing special about the tree and no other obvious potential causes for whatever this is.

Anyone know what this is and how to fix it?
