White mold around green ash tree

I recently was doing some spring cleaning in my back yard, when I noticed something around my tree. It was a white mold growing around the base of our 50 year old green ash. I've never seen it before, and am quite concerned. Does anyone know what it is and how to get rid of it?

why do you presume you need to get rid of it ...

have you ID'd it as a mold.. or are you just throwing the term out there???

what if any impact do you see on the rest of the tree ..

is the lawn sprayed... could it be salt ...

please dont 'fix' .. what isnt broken..

can you say its never been there before.. perhaps you just noticed it ...

when the grass is 3 inches tall.. maybe you just dont see it ...

have you recently lifted the soil level// to grow the grass there???? .. where is the root flare??

I want to know if it'll harm my tree, and if it is harmfull, how to get rid of it.
Whatever it is, it looks very much like mold ( it's hard to tell from the photo, but it's fairly fuzzy). The snow on my lawn just melted just last week, so I haven't tampered the ground around the tree.
Also, I've lived at my house for 15 years, and spend much of my time in my yard, so I would have known if this had happened before.
