There is never a bad time to remove dead limbs and I, personally, am averse to anything climbing up a tree trunk, especially one with age and character.

HOWEVER, if you think in any way your tree is diseased (which it does not sound like you do), and are interested in trimming, get an ISA certified arborist out to evaluate your tree and recommend pruning.

Sound like he wants to make some money off of you, but without pics, it is hard to say for sure. He may very well be giving you his honest opinion on the matter. If you were to let him prune the dead out, you better make sure it is just the dead he is removing and not random branches or ends of branches. That will certainly disfigure and mangle your majestic specimen.

I am against ivy on residential trees. Who knows what the trunk looks like under it. Plus, lets say the tree will hold xx amount of ice before crashing through your roof. Well, it is already holding some ivy that will help it catch wind and more ice.

But yes, you are good to be suspicous. Get another estimate or inspection.

No! Lord only knows what "trim" means to someone who goes door to door selling tree services. Once the damage is done....it's too late. The very act of climbing a tree (using spikes) can be harmful.

John is right. Don't call that guy back unless you feel oblidged to tell him "thanks, but no thanks ".

I could tell you some stories about door to door tree guys.

Ice is not an issue here, I am south of Houston and it is very rare to have ice in trees.
I've done further reading and there is actually quite the controversy about ivy in trees.
Given that there are two vigorous sides in this issue, for the time being I'm not going to do anything. I have no problem choosing sides in a controversy, but given the tree looks very healthy, I'm comfortable waiting and maybe doing some more reading.
