Oak tree/ivy

I was outdoors and a tree company rep stopped by and started talking about my oak tree. It has several ivy vines growing up into it and he said they ought to be removed. He also wanted to trim the tree and prune out some small dead limbs. He told me that by trimming it, it would allow more light in and be beneficial for the tree.
I'm very happy with my oak. It is large and beautiful, the limbs shade my house and lower my electric bill. The tree sheds small dead branches from time to time, I figured that unless dead wood was infested with insects or infected with some disease, (this appears to be a very healthy tree) that it was OK to just leave small dead branches on the tree until the tree drops them.
My own basic instinct is 'first, do no harm' and to just leave the tree alone unless it shows signs of distress. What do you think?
