Tree with Year Round Interest

Hi :

I am looking for a tree which grows up to about 40ft with similar spread which has some feature to give it year round interest. I am looking to break up the monotony of green with something that has color ( leaves or long flowering times through summer). - planting between river birches and weeping willow.

I have considered the Royal Rain Tree, Bloodgood Maple e.t.c But all seem to have something that doesn't work for me - Bloodgood maple - too small, royal rain tree- don't like the scraggly look when young and reported invasive nature.

My ideal will be something like a 40ft growing bloodgood maple. ideas? Any tree I should due looking at?

Ken - Looks like the red beech grows to only 20ft in 15 yrs ?? Prefer something with moderate to fast growth rate.

aaah - very true. I guess I am thinking of a 40 with bloodgood characteristics.

So, is the Royal Rain tree invasive in Virginia too?

The world would be a better place.if there were more stewartia.

paperbark maple. not much of flowers but selections can have incredible fall color (in particular see girard nurseries) and the bronze exfoliating bark is nearly unexcelled.

I say nearly because of two selections of pekin tree lilac. copper curls and i forget the other name, from j. frank schmidt. large white panicles about memorial day and richly colored bark that peels like birch.

the beeches are never to be underestimated. slow to start but magnificent once established.

ther are some truly striking selections norway spruce with new growth or cones richly colored.
