| I have a two year old Styrax japonica in my garden. I live in zone 8. I haven't had a problem until this spring. It's not putting out leaves. The tree is green if you scratch the bark. What could be the issue?

This tree has a reputation for being somewhat late to leaf out in spring, especially after a harsh winter. Not sure about your climate, but I wouldn't expect to see this tree in leaf here until later this month or the beginning of next. Check to see if any buds are visible along the stems - they should be obvious and beginning to swell.

I have a Styrax japonicus 'Emerald Pagoda'. It has leafed out, and the flower buds are beginning to show. It should bloom in the next couple weeks. Our winter north of you has been mild so i doubt the winter had anything to do with it. Has it been dry down there?

Thanks to you both. I actually saw a tiny leaf this morning. I was concerned because it leafed out earlier last year.

Ours just began blooming today...and it's SO COLD outside. Might get some frost down here.
