I apologize ahead of time if this is not the best section to post this, but I wanted to warn as many people as possible. AVOID FASTGROWINGTREES.COM
I ordered a mimosa tree.
I received my tree on Thursday 3/22 and sent a message through their website that day with pictures attached.
I didn't get a response within the business days stated so I called.
I was told I would get an email within 24hours, when that didn't happend I called again. I had to leave a voicemail with the person I had talked to.
Then I received an email a day later, that basically ignored everything I had concerns with:
"this is perfectly normal for the mimosa. It will be perfectly fine to plant.
If you have any questions, please let us know" I emailed back that day, and got no response.
I waited a week and sent a last email saying please respond, and waited another week and here we are.
Basically for $100 I received a long stick with some clear dead parts on top, and very little roots.
Not a single branch coming off the main shoot.
It was thrown in a pot with some new potting media. It looked as if it was hacked off. To summarize,
bad product, and even worse customer service. I have ordered from other companies before and know what
to expect from a tree. DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS COMPANY. I gave them every chance to make it right... |

Hi Nick, I looked at their site. The price is now $48.95 for 3-4' plant. To their credit they state: "Mimosa trees tend to have very little branches in the first few years." You might also want to know mimosas tend to be one of the very last trees to come out of dormancy in the Spring. Do you think that they lowered the price because of your complaint? |

I understand about the few branches, since they usually spread out into two or three low branches and then have a lot of upper branches, but this is just a single shoot. I attached the 'root ball' I ordered the larger tree, not the 3'-4' plant.

Thats an overgrown tube tree. Usually a plant shouldn't exceed 12" or so in a tube. I had a couple Aesculus that where in a tube too long but again they were just 2 year old seedlings. I wouldn't plant that even if it was free.

Aren't Mimosa trees invasive? Which I assume means they would be prolific and easy to propagate. Why would they cost $100 or even $40?

| Exactly...this is what you drop $100 on. A slow growing Japanese Maple. But obviously you still didn't get what was advertised.

Ey whaas, what acer palmatum is that? Looks quite good. Nick, there is a website called garden watch dog where folks place reviews of nurseries. Kinda the BBB of the industry I suppose. No nursery has a 100% satisfaction but you get the idea what you are dealing with.

Interesting post. I ordered a weeping willow from fastgrowingtrees.com in Sept 10'. I was pleasently surprised at what arived. The size was bigger than I expected. I received it as it was dropping leaves in Oct and planted it immidiately. The next spring was happy to see it wake up and triple in size last year. I was going to order a mimosa from them this year but found one at my favorite local nursery. The one I bought from the nursery is about 8' tall only has three branches about 2' long and has not started growing yet. I am told this is to be expected and am looking forward to growth in May. But your picture of the roots does not lie. I would be very unhappy of a tree that size arrived with so few roots.

Well I would not trust them even knowing another may have gotten a good tree, that if there is a problem they don't seem to care or have to business sense to get back to an unhappy customer. I'm glad they sent you a good tree though. That is about what I expected pcan (what you described from the nursery), but this is just a single shoot and no branches.. I feel for all the trees that budded too early this year, a lot more freezing to come... :o( I should have checked the Garden Watchdog, but at least I used it to post to warn others. |

I would say a good way to judge a online suplier is how they handle the situation when the customer receives a faulty product. Sure they sent me a good tree but if they hadn't it sounds like they wouldn't have handled it well. Even from the best nurserys some plants just aren't in good shape or don't make it. A good nursery makes everything right.

A good nursery makes everything right. That is the truth! I recenlty received a conifer that wasn't packed perfectly so when the shipping company tipped it upside down it damage all the leader buds. Just like the owner of Conifer Kingdom responded within hours and said keep the plant, I'll send you a new one right away. That is how you retain and get new customers. Those that don't make it right after inquiring are the ones that need to be put to shame and out of business.

Spring hill nursery is one I had a bad experience with a few years ago. I don't know if they have improved or not.

Call your credit card... tell them to stop the payment. I wish I known about that when I purchased plants last fall from Girards here in Ohio. I was going to purchase some Thuja Green Giants last year from a company. I ordered a few months in advance and the company said just let me know when to ship. Well I asked them 3-4 weeks before hand and they said that particular week would be good. I sent several e-mails stating that I would like them shipped. Each time they would say It's raining and the trees are outside, we are short staffed, etc. Then I didn't receive any response for a couple weeks. So I called my credit card and they said they will stop payment. But if the company shipped me the trees, I must refuse the package or return them. The company never shipped the trees and I haven't heard from them since. If you call your credit card company and tell them, they will probably just ask you to ship the trees back and the credit will show up in 3-4 days. That's a lot of money to spend on a bad tree... if it were a $10 tree I wouldn't bother. Heck a couple years ago I purchased an 8' B&B crab apple for $80 lol.

Ordering online can be risky business as I have learned all to well. We purchased our home in 08 with a 1/3 of an acre back yard that was nothing but field and needing all new landscaping from scratch. Once we had ran a tractor over it, ripped out the old tree stumps and fenced it I was ready to start planting. In spring 2010 I probably spent close to $1000 on plants and trees and such online just looking for the cheapest deals I could get. Well I pretty much threw away that $1000 that year. :( I have learned a valuable lesson and now only order from places the Dave's Garden's Garden Watchdog rates well and only order if it is something I can't find locally. Since then I have had great experiences with the companies I have done business with online. Sometimes they are not the cheapest, but I always get a good product. This year I have ordered from Forest Farms, Sooner Plant Farms and Plant Delights with great results from all.

I've been burnt twice. We all learn that way. The first time was when I ordered some fruit trees. They did replace two obviously DOA items but what they sent were not what I ordered and also paid extra for. All the trees I ordered and paid extra for were supposedly full dwarf. That's something you don't know for sure you have until they've grown on. Ha. Not only are they not dwarf, they're not even semi-dwarf. They are all standards. Not a big deal if I hadn't spaced them out for fully dwarf trees. I let master gardeners use my property for field trips and let's just say the extension agent laughed when he saw it, and I was mortified. LOL. Worse yet were the two fruit pear trees ended up being..........ornamental bradfords. I took the chain saw to them as soon as I saw what it bore. The worst part is the time. There were a lot of years wasted before I saw their (intentional?) mistake. By that time I had already invested the time and in some cases that's more precious than the money. I would have gladly torn them out and replaced them with appropriate material, and called it a lesson learnt when they were young. Doing that after they'd already become established is more difficult. Reputable is positively imperative when mail ordering and worth your time to check out. The other time when I was burnt was a large order of pelargonium cuttings for my business from what was once a leader in the business. They took my money and ran. The business had been sold out to another owner who couldn't live up to the reputation. I contacted their state deparment of agriculture. Mail order plants are supposed to be inspected and they must meet the criteria their state sets down. It's regulated material.

I got 4 horribly pot bound plants from Sooner Plant Farm BUT the difference is that the owner (maybe manager) made it right and we worked it out. If they aren't willing to work it out I'm with disputing the transaction with your CC company.
RE: Tree Ordering - Warning

Thanks everyone. For the heck of it I did put a dispute in with the credit card company to see if anything will happen. I don't have a lot of hope, but at least the company will realize that I'm really upset if the credit card company contacts them. I should have known it was a bad thing when they charged me two weeks before they shipped the product.
RE: Tree Ordering - Warning

Many companies bill differently. I order a lot of plants from SongSparrow... they always bill 2 weeks before shipment. Some companies I order from bill you the same day (even if you order 2 months in advance). While other companies wait until your order is shipped.

Guess what: "Hello, I have received all of your information and noted the order. The 5-7 ft Mimosa is no longer available, so I have sent a request over for a credit on the item. I have asked the credit be submitted to the card used for your previous order. Once the request has been approved, you should be receiving an email with all pertinent information. Thank you very much for your time and patience with this matter. If there is anything further you need, please feel free to contact myself or our customer service department. Sincerely, Heather" Looks like a lot of emails, and almost a month later I'll finally get my money back :o)
RE: Tree Ordering - Warning

Even if I hadn't seen all the negative reviews for this company, I'd avoid them based solely on the incomplete and deceptive descriptions advertising their mimosa and Paulownia trees. You'd never know that mimosas are disease prone, or that Paulownias don't flower reliably below about zone 7, or that either tree has invasive characteristics. I'm on the northern end of hardiness for mimosas, but for the heck of it I started seed of the variety "E.H. Wilson" a few months ago, and the seedlings are already branching nicely at about 6 inches in height. So whatever these people are doing to produce a nonbranching stick, I suspect it's not due to the tree's normal growing habit.
