Cut Down This Tree??? Help...

We have a huge oak in the woody part of our yard, probably 10 foot or so in diameter and 70 ft tall (just guessing here). It is about 12 feet up from the ground then V's with the left V leaning out to maybe a 20 degree angle from the tree and the right V going nearly strait up.

The left V is fine, one dead branch, but otherwise seems healthy. The right V, however, is dead at the top, probably the top 25% of the tree. It has two lower limbs, one pretty good size, that are alive but no other limbs below that.

My husband and I are wondering if we should cut this tree down, or if it's safe to leave alone for a few more years. I hate to lose it but don't want a big wind blowing it over either. I've put some pics below...with the last picture being made up of a number of pics put together since it's too big to get in one camera shot.

The part in the Red is the dead part of the right V.
Any feedback will be appreciated. I promise I won't hold you to it. We had a tree man who was cutting in the area and he said he's take it out and gave us a bid, but I'm worried that he only wants the job.

The tree appears to be in serious decline. This decision is somewhat subjective, in that if it were to drop the dead section, would it land on a building, anything else of value or onto another good tree? If not, you could leave it but I can assure you that if it were my tree it would become firewood. I would drop it and plant anew.

Exactly right Horst. It's down to the question of what, if any targets lie below the tree. Kid's sandbox? Take it down pronto. Just a lot of other trees and brush? No big deal, leave it be to provide nesting and food habitat for birds and other critters.

That's how I would decide.

Where are you?
I ask because we are losing a lot of old oaks around here- oak wilt or something else, I don't know.
I've had two taken out here over the past five years- my sympathy because those are pricey to have removed.

Thanks everyone... Still weighing our options but cutting is looking more likely now.

Cear...we are in NW Arkansas. We took one down earlier this year ...700.00 and now we're looking at 1200 for these two. Oh yes, very pricey! I was hoping we could just get by with taking down the one and that the other would make it another year or two....

how big is your lot..

and does it threaten anything ...

if so.. gotta go ...

if not.. well just watch it.. perhaps not camp under it in a storm .. and find out if a falling tree makes a sound ...
