I planted this tree last September from a pot. It was healthy and green when planted, lost leaves normally in winter. We had a mild winter and an early spring, yet the only leaves I have are coming off new shoots from the trunk. Nothing on existing branches. The trunk growth has been there for a month, with no sign of anything on the branches. What is up with this tree?

hard to focus near the bottom .. but the growth from the bottom, probably tells the most of the story ... and that story is.. the roots are still alive.. but a vast majority of the rest is dead .... if you have a warranty .. time to exercise it ... was it a late season bargain?? what do you apply to that near perfect lawn??? and what did you do to it .. once you pulled off the pot .. since the grass seems to be about 8 inches from the trunk ... any root surgery.. etc ??? ken

Thats what I was afraid of. I do have a warranty. Time to exchange. Nothing special to the lawn. No weed spray, just one fertilizer application a month or so ago. I did do some root surgery to fix the pot bound issues. NothIng too major. I'm thinking red obolisk beech may replace this tree.

VERY different shaped trees as you probably know...the beech will be, as its name suggests, very columnar, while the birch has a spreading crown and will provide substantial shade once it matures. The beech has striking leaf color. I have experience with both and like them both very much. Good luck!

How sensitive to heat is the beech? I have no experience with it.

You sure have been getting blasted by plant issues. I still haven't seen a single post of good news. Although its surely rated for your heat zone, River birch wouldn't be my first choice for your area. Do the scratch test, if its green maybe give it another month. If its starting to brown get your credit and move on to a tree that is better adapted to winds and heat. For some reason a thought rises to the top that Betula is sensitive to fall transplanting.

Whaas I just don't have questions on the good stuff :). The pin oak in the background is doing great, for one. I've never really considered the Beech, but I saw it at the local HD for pretty cheap. I just don't know anything about it.

A beech tree? No buddy! Although that is a great cultivar, lol. These are fussy trees, much less vigorous than your River birch but still have surface roots, demand moist soils and prefer shaded roots...hence why they are branched low to the ground. Same as Aesculus genus. Get something a little tougher to get things going. Its so open around there, not an environment conducive to the trees you are looking at. Pin Oak is a common tree as it is so tough and adaptable (except very alkaline sites).

I think whaas has it nailed.it ..only does ok here with enough summer water and we are mild and moist in winter, very different from your area. Get some ideas from folks near you on what does well in your area - good luck!
