Columnar Norway Spruce 'Cupressina' Growth Habit in Wisconsin

Hi there,

I recently purchased eleven Picea abies 'Cupressina' trees to plant around a portion of the patio. I want to create a screen and I want them to touch each other when they are fully grown. Some sources tell me that this particular variety will get 6-10 feet wide while others say 6 feet. The guy at the nursery, where I bought the trees from, told me that they will never even reach 6 feet in Wisconsin as the growing season is very short and suggested spacing them 4 feet apart. I am not sure what to believe. Does planting them four feet apart sound too close? I should also note that they will 'not' be staggered.

Any good advise is greatly appreciated!!! :)

Thank you!

Renee, I know precious little about that cultivar, but I don't think the person that said Wisconsin's short growing season would in effect dwarf these trees was right. Regular species Norway spruce grows well here, and vigorously. There may indeed be places where it can do even better, but new terminal growth of three feet is not at all unusual. That's a lot of growth in a pine family member.

Beyond that, like I say, I don't know. Any cultivar fanciers know anything more?

and perhaps that is why she should ask in the conifer forum .. since the resident tree nut .. admits he is no conifer expert .. lol

in conifers.. size ESTIMATES are generally at 10 years ... and if you divide any given number by 10.. you get a general annual growth rate .... and yes.. it usually has a range..

how it all works in your zone.. in your garden.. is left to fate.. and getting fully established ...

carp.. now she doenst need to go over there.. lol ..

screening really has nothing to do with spacing.. or annual growth rate.. its a function of how fast you want the screen ... do you want to wait 5 years for them to screen??? ... its all about instant gratification ... vs natural form ...

One at the Seattle arboretum had an average crown spread of 19' during 1995, when it was thought to be 46' tall. A cypress spruce in the same collection, perhaps the same specimen was measured as being 60' tall around 2005-6.

er.......tree nut...I'll take that. But "no conifer expert"? Ouch. I consider myself plenty 'expert' in real conifers. Now those morphodite itty bitty little malformed things some consider 'conifers'....not so much!

If a body is prone to being insulted, this "orphan site" is the place.
