The new Labrador puppies at our shop decided to strip the bark on the bosses favorite tree. What should he/we do to make sure its ok.

trim.. wait.. first chain the dogs .. lol

trim off the loose stuff ..

and let the tree heal itself ...

do NOTHING ELSE ...

except maybe.. spray it with bitter apple stuff to keep the hounds of hell away from it ... one spurt in each dogs mouth.. then onto anything you wish them to ignore .. its pavlovian in its use .... [i would not spray the wound itself ...]

I agree, do nothing but trim--do not apply any wound sealants!! The wound is not fatal and Will gradually regenerate new bark. I risk this damage on magnolias, dawn reds, bald cypress, and ginkgo every year. You can buy items to protect the trunk--pastic or metal collars.

the dogs have been chained LOL. you should see what they have done to the canna. Mowed them down like goats.

That was my first thought, to just let it heal but I told him i would do some research. I will let him know

Thanks

Funny, that's exactly same little fence I use to protect little trees for several years now.

When I got a new puppy, he dug out a newly planted tree. I scolded at him over it and he never touched trees since then but he makes me take him out for a walk in the morning and late afternoon rather than do his business in the backyard. If I don't do it, he wakes me up at 2 am to go out in the backyard because he can't hold it in any longer. Talk about spoiled brat.

Hey Lou- kudzu is growing up my paulownia, not really. I got a little fence around my six month old italian stone pine, cuz it's in the front of the front yard and all the dogs come by and like to pee on the foliage- plus, no more foot traffic near the root zone. Looks a little hoity toity... I like Howard's tree goop- equal parts natural diatomaceous earth, compost, expanded shale, and water. But I've never used it...I caught a squirrel jacking with my bamboo this shooting season (bamboo shoots are delicious), he was high up on top of a cane he had jumped onto from a light pole... I cocked that cane back, what was he going to do?, and let her rip...damn squirrel landed right on top of my little stone pine...and peed himself...next day he was giving me the eyeball from high up that light pole...so I make a loud squirrel noise... and his buddy jumps out of the neighbor's photinia, and onto that light pole, and the squirrel war was on...Gotta go for now, have a good day neighbor...

So anyways, when one of em gets near the light pole now, and I make that squirrel noise, they attack each other...it's psychological warfare...I got peaches, plums, figs, pears...I'm trying the no kill approach and get inside those two little rodents' heads for now...plenty of oaks in the neighbor's yard with the photinia where they belong...

Ok Mackel...

LOL, at one point I had over 200 plants in cages with those little fences to protect them from my bigfooted giant breed dogs.
It serves as a fine visual deterrent if you toss in some training and supervision, but puppies left out long enough to get bored can do some damage fast.

Four years later and everything has survived and the cages are off all but the most delicate plants, but there for a while it looked really silly.

Well the fence was doing no good so I took a 4 foot piece of 6" PVC pipe and split long ways then put it around the trunk. If they get through that they can have the tree, LOL

Thanks for the advice.

Mike
