what it does.. is allow water into the inside wood.. and sooner or later.. that rots.. and it collapses ..

all that.. counting in tree years.. could be anywhere between 5 and 25 years ... from now ...

my Lapins cherry developed a horrible weeping canker in its 4th year.....but because it was just coming into cropping, I confess to ignoring it in the vague hope of a miraculous cure.....and 4 years later, the entire wound has finally callused over (it stopped the terrible weeping sap the second year but then took its time to heal.........and yep, it may well have a shortened lifespan. But it was my only cherry, so I didn't worry too much about infections (and I was a complete nitwit).......I am glad I kept it (although the next tortuous palaver is the annual netting from ravenous pigeons.......)
I dunno what the point of this ramble is really, 'cept to say I am glad I held off the saw and sense of defeat for a year or so.......

Well, my I laws had a weeping cherry that developed a "wound" like this, it didn't last a few years before the entire trunk was torn in half...killing the tree...I'm hoping this doesn't happen to this tree....should I pint that black,stuff on it?? Not sure what the name of the black stuff is...
