Well done on the pix. Looks like Ligustrum lucidum from here. When the privet hedges are let go and they fruit, the birds love to eat the berries and they get spread.

Concur!!! The bane of my existence...and it pops up right in the middle of other shrubs so I don't realize that it is there until it is 5' tall with a substantial trunk! Get rid of it early and often.

Kill it with fire. I have a neighbor that doesn't take care of their yard and they have one growing right in the middle like a specimen tree. It sprouted 10-15 years ago from a seed, and now it seeds all over our yard. ugh.

You nailed it. Everything I can find online about Ligustrum lucidum describes this thing perfectly. Now I don't feel so bad about ripping it out. I need to check the rest of my property. I suspect there might be more hiding in the less traveled areas.
