Help identify mystery tree in North Carolina

A few days ago I cut down a tree in my back yard that was growing way too large and way too fast and choking out some camellias. In the last year, I estimate that it's grown 4 or 5 FEET from the previous year. It's EXTREMELY aggressive. Before I cut it down, it was 15-18 feet tall, and I believe it was evergreen. At one point in the previous year, I remember it having some white flowery "tufts" at the very top of the tree, but nowhere else. It had three different-sized trunks all merging together at the same root. Pictures of the leaves, bark, and a single leaf follow.
