Baldcypress Cuttings Possible?

Posted by fifthzim Z5/ KS (My Page) on

Has anyone tried and succeeded in rooting a baldcypress cutting? I took some dormant cuttings in the fall, treated them with 3 different strengths of powdered rooting hormone and put them in my mist bench in perlite.

All 3 treatments have put on leaves/needles and have continued to show decent top growth for over a month now, but have yet to send out any roots.

Just wondered if anyone has had success in rooting these trees this way, and if so, what their chosen method was.

My seeds are germinating wonderfully after their stratification, so I'll have plenty of lil trees to play with this spring.....just wanted to fiddle with some cuttings as well!

Thanks for any replies!

I am very interested also. I pruned some small branches off of my bald cypress ~2 weeks ago and stuck one in the ground. The foliage is still green so far. I am glad you asked.

From my understanding, it's possible but difficult.

I pruned some limbs off of a 3-4 yr seedling I'd planted near my farm pond and just stuck in the mud at the edge of the pond - 10 years or so ago. I'm presuming they rooted, as they are smaller copies of the original seedling. I've never attempted to pull them up, but can't imagine that they'd still be alive if they hadn't rooted.
Collected cuttings from a young pondcypress and dawn redwood a month or two back - stuck them in pots of soilless potting mix - no rooting hormone treatment - they're leafing out, looking fine; time will tell whether or not they'll root or not. I'm betting they do.

Yes. From juvenile plants and sprouts from the base of a tree if there are any. I've took cuttings from the current seasons growth just after it hardened off.

Yes it is possible. Chinese people are doing these by millions. My old university is doing it now.

Here is a link that might be useful: Scoll down to Taxodium links.

This is what I did this past year to root "Nanjing Beauty" bald cypress hybrid.
I took cuttings in May/June from new growth growing directly off the trunk rather than off branches. I used Dip N Grow and a medium of turface, granite, pine bark fines, and perlite (similar to Al's Gritty mix from the container forum). I used 2 Rootmaker trays- 32 cell and put them into clear storage containers to keep the humidity up and next to a window for bright light. I would occasionally open them up for fresh air and to mist and water. In Sept I checked a few and they had rooted. I had over 80% success rate.

Thanks for the info, everyone!

I'll keep watching the hardwood cuttings, and try again with some softwood later this spring. I hadn't thought about direct-planting the cuttings down on the creekbottom. I'll have to give that a whirl next year when I'm doing the willows and cottonwood.

Thanks again!

Mine is still green and actually has pushed the current growth a little more. Good luck!
