Hazelnut Tree Pollination

I am in AZ high dessert, around 3600' elevation. I am interested in planting a hazelnut tree, but it looks like they need two plants to pollinate. Can anyone tell me how close the two trees need to be? I only have room for one in the spot I'm looking at, but could plant another one 60 - 70 feet away, it that would fulfill the pollination requirement. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

i have what was called a turkish trazel ... i thought

and it is an 9 foot shrublike thing.. that self pollinates .. and produced nuts within about 5 years.. here in adrian MI ...

i have no clue what that means for AZ ... other than to tell you there are options other than waiting 50 years.. for a large tree to mature and bare nuts .. [??]

i am going to have to see if i can find the name of mine ... the one at the link sounds pretty close ... though my search did indicate .... that none were available to be mailed to AZ ... good luck with that

RE: Hazelnut Tree Pollination

Filberts/hazelnuts flower in winter and are wind pollinated. Generally, with wind pollinated fruits or nuts, a closer spacing is recommended than with bee/insect pollinated fruit. Most sources recommend no further than 50' between trees.

Hazels are more shrub-like than real trees, producing multi-stemmed thickets in time. And they bear quite early, at 2-3 years.

I have many hazelnuts that are all different types planted about 8 feet apart. Only one looks to be more of a tree form, the rest are shrubby forms that I wanted to sucker since they are a windbreak for me. I have been getting hazelnuts for the past 3 years though mine are not the large kind that the Pacific Coast grows for the nut market. I get my stock from Burnt Ridge Nursery in WA. They have descriptions of which varieties are compatible for pollination with each selection.
