A spruce tree mystery

I noticed something curious in an Alberta Spruce tree I have in my courtyard - I hope someone on the forum can tell me what causes this and provide some information. No one I've shown it to has seen it before.
There is a single branch about halfway up the tree that looks like it belongs to a different species of pine tree. It has long, bluish, widely-spaced needles, similar to a blue spruce. The entire rest of the tree has the short, green needles common to an Alberta spruce. Is this common? Genetically, what is the cause of this? Thanks.

RE: A spruce tree mystery

well.. first its a conifer ...

second its picea glauca albertina something or another.. which is a 'dwarf' form ...

so the 'reversions' is to the non-dwarf form.. or the short latin part of the name.. picea glauca ...

and those are large forest production trees.. and will take over the dwarf form.. if left there .... see link

RE: A spruce tree mystery

Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca var. albertiana 'Conica') is a fixed juvenile foliage cultivar; its needles are the same as needles on a one-year old Alberta White Spruce (Picea glauca var. albertiana) seedling.

What your shoot is doing is a reversion to normal adult Alberta White Spruce foliage. It happens fairly frequently.
