What should I do with forked tree?

After removing a large, sick tree I realized that the maple behind it has a fork a little over half way up. The tree is thinner and 20'-25' tall with a 4.5" diameter trunk at the base. (See pictures) Both sides of the fork are about the same diameter. Should I remove one side or do nothing? If I do need to remove it, do you have any thoughts about how? (remove all at once, cut back then remove in a couple of months, etc)

Thanks for any help.
