'Valley Forge' X 'Princeton' Ameican elm seed available

In 2003 I planted a 'Valley Forge' American elm. It has flowered for the last 5 years or so, but has never produced seed until this year, when my 'Princeton' American elm flowered for the first time. It now has thousands of seeds!
The literature I have read suggests that American elm is self incompatible. In the case of 'Valley Forge', it seems to be true, and I assume all these seeds are crosses of my two trees.

I do not know the genetics of Dutch elm disease resistance. However, as these two cultivars have the best DED resistance of all cultivars tested, AFAIK, the seedlings should have a good shot at being resistant. At least a good a shot as any other seedlings. In a large group, all the necessary genetics should be there, but no individual seedling should be counted on to be resistant.

Anyhow, the seeds will be falling soon. If you'd like some, send me a SASE. Contact me off list for my address.

Alex

Time to bump this off the top

What I'm interested in is the seedlings - if most/all are resistant, that means that the resistance gene is recessive...but if many are not, the susceptibility gene is the one that is recessive, but the dominant resistance gene is just uncommon in the general U. americana population.

joeshmoe, I don't think all that many are resistant from any cross. It seems there are lots of reasons a tree is resistant, small diameter phloem vessels that the tree can wall off, high levels of certain compounds that kill or slow down the fungus...probably a bunch more. Most of the papers are up for 24 hours, then hidden behind a pay wall after that. If you take notes, then you can't find the paper anymore, as it has been taken down. grrr. All I could find out was to plant as many seedlings as you could and let DED cull them. I'd love to find a source of Valley Forge in Canada, as it sure would make getting them to PEI easier. :)

Jocelynpei, is it legal to buy one in the US and drive it across the border?

I don't know, but I'll look into that, thanks. I wouldn't want it seized at the border after all that.

I live in western Ohio, and I am very interested in some of your 'Valley Forge' X 'Princeton' seeds.

I have many young American Elms on my land, but DED kills them all off in waves. I don't care what the resistance is of the 'hybrid' seeds, as long as the resistance genes are represented. I hope to use these seeds to mix some resistance genes into the gene pool already present in my trees.

Taking plants into Canada (ay):

My wife is from Canada. We checked in to that one time and you CAN do it but you need plants inspected and i think it cost like $50. It seemed like a hassle so we decided against transporting.
