You can also try trimming off a small branch at the trunk and see if the cut on the trunk is wet. You should have some sap running by now.

Every year these questions come in.

If the small branches are flexible, patience. If they are all brittle, learn from the planting error for the next time - proper depth, don't plant in August, water them well, etc.

Hi, new here, so bear with me if I am posting incorrectly. We planted a clump river birch exactly one year ago. It did fine last year, but at this point it is still doing nothing. I know that with the winter we have had everything is behind, but I am now getting nervous. The branches are all pliable and and the buds all still the size of a pinhead. Should I panic yet?
