So...... my hawthorne is all funky...

It doesn't look like a Washington hawthorn to me. Maybe a fruit tree or an ornamental fruit tree. I would cut the lower branches off and have a pretty decent looking tree.

Agree. It's not W.hawthorn; maybe seedling callery pear, but not Crataegus.

Looks like plum to me, or at least something from the prunus family

but it has enormous thorns on it..I didn't like fruit trees had thorns?

Tree is a pear, these can be pokey.

No 'e' in hawthorn, when talking about a hawthorn tree.

well that kind of sucks. I got this from Arbor Day Foundation tagged as a washington hawthorn

When you began to think there was something wrong with the tree did you do a little Googling? I'm surprised you didn't find some pictures of the foliage in your research. It's totally different from your tree's.
