Especially in your hot part of the country, I'd wait until fall or winter. Doing it now will mean that the tree will likely experience significant stress when dealing with the extremes of summer (just around the corner) with a greatly compromised root system. I would not do any pruning on it (except for removing dead, diseased, damaged, or rubbing branches) until at least a year after transplant.

Thanks Brandon. I was thinking the same thing. Maybe too hot to try now since I'd be transplanting into full sun.

i would NOT prune it.. nor root prune..

just mark the calender.. and go for it in the PROPER season.. which is when its nudey.. unleafed ...

its all about growing some roots while not having to support the green leaves ...

or if evergreen for you.. when the leaves are basically dormant ...

and NOT in the HOT part of the year ...
