| My husband and I planted a Winter King Hawthorn one week ago. I'm afraid I was a little impulsive with the whole process, but I do love this tree! My main concerns are that the tree is not leafing out nor budding on the top, has a little bark damage, and the holes showing up in the leaves. I just want it to thrive.
It is 12 ft. tall- at least, with a 2 x 2 ft. root ball, which came balled and burlapped. We planted in a 9 ft. diameter, 2 ft. deep saucer shaped hole, backfilled with all the original, very fast draining soil, and watered thoroughly. I think it is planted just a little too deep, but I dug out what I could to expose the root flare. I know now that it would have been better to go with a smaller tree, but what is done is done. I'm just seeking advice on whether or not this tree is off to a bad start. I did lots of searches on here and read many posts on how to plant with the root flare at or above grade, no amendments, etc. I think we did okay for first timers. Sorry for the over abundance of questions/concerns. Any advice much appreciated! Barely any leaves on top. Root flare exposed enough? I will eventually have to remove more soil around the base, but was thinking of waiting until fall. Will cutting small roots cause serious harm? What I think is the top of a root. This is showing up on a lot but not the majority of leaves. Rust? Removed the tree wrap(after planting) to find this! Should have checked first I know. This will heal right? It is only about 1.5" x 1" |

| It's good to see the root flair, that part looks good. The wound on the trunk of the tree doesn't. Look that bad leave well enough alone. Can not tell what is going on with top of the tree. I don't think that's. Rust on leaves, i would take a sample to your cooperative extension office. I don't think it's Detrimentel to the tree. |

| Unless the picture is deceiving, there's no need to do anything else to the root flare or surrounding soil level. And, it certainly sounds like you did everything right at planting. The wound does look bad, but appears (from what I can tell) to be mechanical damage (mostly, based on the torn edges of the bark around the wound). Since you can see it up close and personal, you may be a better judge of whether the wound appears to be from mechanical trauma. If it is, it should heal over fairly quickly and not cause any problems. Ignore the leaf spots. The partially leafless top might concern me a little, but there are some leaves popping out here and there. It seems the tree hasn't had the best of care at the nursery/store. |

| the leaf spots look more like shipping damage.. or storm.. whatever ... they just look battered and discolored ... frankly.. tree diseases are pretty rare ... its a new transplant.. they react weird.. and do weird things ... as long as it holds its leave.. you are in good shape.. the soil looks dry ... there were a lot of roots cut off ... if one presumes a tree is at least twice as big below ground as above.. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL WATER FOR TWO YEARS .... it needs deep thorough soakings.. and then near drying in between ... how that works in your soil involves you and your index finger ... and a good carpet of mulch .. properly applied ... is IMPERATIVE ... what in the world did you dig a 9 foot wide hole for?? ... lol ... that is way over kill.. in a good draining soil .... but it shouldnt hurt anything ... no fert .. EVER ... it will get whatever it needs from what looks like a fertilized lawn ... ken |
