Redbud tree sprouting multiple branches at each node

I planted a couple mail order eastern redbuds over the winter. They're starting to leaf out but in several spots it looks like multiple branches are growing out of the same node. Is this normal? Should I let it be or prune off the extras so that there's one branch for each node? If it matters, the trees were topped off for shipping and are about 3 ft tall.
