Pine tree losing needles on bottom branches

L A

There is still a lot of snow around my trees but I noticed that the bottom branches have lost their needles. I bought 5 ft pine tree last summer and had it planted. The branches were almost touching the ground and were nice and full. There is still a couple feet of snow and I guess the branches I can see are the second row of branches up and there looks to be hardly any needles left. They are hard to get at with the snow. I will try to get to it and take a photo to post. The soil is wet in the area. I lost a spruce last fall. It turned yellow and died. There are springs uphill from this area. I have planted 6 trees but it seems the flow of water went right to the tree that died. Im worried this is the cause of my pine losing its needles and that this one too will die. What can I plant here in wet soil? Trees are too expensive to keep buying and paying to get planted.
