Parrotia Bark Cracking and Peeling

My Parrotia Persica is 4 years old. The majority of the damage is on the SW side which leads me to believe that it is frost crack or sunscald. I noticed cracks, wrapped the trunk last fall, and when I removed patches of the bark were falling off/loose. The damage looks pretty deep and I am wondering if it is reversible.

Should look like jigsaw puzzle pieces. There should not be deep cracks.
