I heard tree shelters (tubes) speed up the growth of many deciduous trees. Perhaps they would work for Ginkgo's as well?

Ginkgoes are very slow to get going. Once they do, they have a decent growth rate. That is how it is.

I have a seven year old ginkgo which I got as a seedling from under a large female ginkgo and now about 7 foot 2" tall. I would say after this spring/summer it may reach 8 feet or more. It is in full sun. I have another ginkgo the same age which may be 6 foot 3" and it does not get full sun. The circumference of the trunk of the 7 2" is probably three times the 6 3" one. My larger ginkgo I bought at a nursery grows about 1 foot a year I would say and it gets full sun. I have never fertilized them. I also don't mulch them. They seem to like a lot of sun...

Mulch properly (preferably with an organic mulch, at least out to the dripline, farther out if at all possible, about 3" to 4" deep depending on the type of mulch, and not touching the trunk), ensure that it gets the necessary amount of moisture (during unusually dry periods), and possibly fertilize it with some high-nitrogen (low-everything else) fertilizer. Nitrogen is most often the one nutrient not found in sufficient amounts in soil to maximize tree growth. You could also get a soil test done to see if other nutrients are needed.

Oh, it's not planted in the ground? In that case, the biggest thing you can do to give it a boost is to get it planted in the ground. For various reasons, it's much better off in the ground (assuming it is protected from varmints, lawnmowers, etc) and much better off outdoors than indoors or in a windowsill.

Yes, I know it´s better on the ground, but it is too small, and I have two evil dogs that will destroy virtually anything without a decent trunk or horrible thorns. My ginkgo was too expensive for me to risk it that way. But maybe I can design a device for keeping them away. Thank you.

Knowing it was in a pot is key information. Not sure why it was hidden.
